Festive Forest - a new pattern
This is a quick and fun Christmas FPP pattern that is suitable for confident beginners and advanced quilters alike.
Festive Forest is available in my pattern shop.
I’m a big fan of colourful Christmas decorations. Did you see my pictures on Instagram of the tree skirt I made last year? You might notice a little trend towards bright, rainbow-y colour schemes there.
I do have a small tree in the entryway of our house that I decorate in more traditional red and white, but our main Christmas tree is a hodgepodge of collected ornaments. We always pick one up on our travels, and quite a few we’ve inherited, too. Others are gifts from friends and family, and of course there are the many handmade ones the kids have brought home from school over the years. So, colourful decorations go very well with the vibe in our house.
For my table runner I chose Kona solids in Valentine, Corn Yellow, Turquoise, Fern and Torch for the trees, and Chartreuse, Ocean, Candy Pink and Lemon for the block backgrounds. The border is Turquoise as well. The colours are based on a retro-vibe Christmas fabric that looked so happy and cheerful that I just had to use those colours.
I decided on simple echo quilting, and didn’t bind my runner but rather turned it to finish. It meant a few more threads to bury because I had to quilt it after finishing the edges, but I often prefer that look on a table runner.
The Festive Forest pattern is a versatile, quick and fuss-free foundation paper piecing pattern that can be done in just about any colour scheme you like. Check out this blog post with all my fabulous testers’ examples, and have a nose around #psqfestiveforest on Instagram for even more inspiration. It comes with two block sizes and instructions for making a table runner with both of them. The blocks are a generous 13.5″ x 9″ or 9″ x 6″, which means no fiddly little pieces and they’re very quick to put together.
It’s perfect for adding a new piece or two to your own decor or making gifts for friends and family. The smaller block is perfect for little gift bags, pot holders, mug rugs, place mats, or framing in an embroidery hoop. Make a pillow with the large one, or turn two big ones point-to-point for another take on the table runner.
Making extras of the large block easily turns this into a quilt (add some sashing and wider borders and you’ll have a throw in no time) and, of course, you can always change the size of the blocks in your printer settings and the options become endless.
