This pattern is perfect for using every colour of the rainbow, but I could also see this working really well in a gradient, or to show off a favourite fabric collection.

This was a fun quilt to put together, and a quick make, too. It's a great project to make if want something that won't take weeks to put together.

I chose a rainbow of 30 Kona solids for this quilt. I made 4 HSTs from each colour. This gave me a good variety of shades of each colour, so that the individual HSTs weren't blending together too much, but without being too overwhelming at the same time. I like that Kona has so many colours that you can do a full rainbow of 30 fabrics without ending up with colours that are darker or lighter than needed.

The colours I used were Maize, Canary, Sunny, School Bus, Persimmon, Tangerine, Coral, Red, Wine, Crimson, Sangria, Pomegranate, Valentine, Azalea, Gumdrop, Geranium, Dark Violet, Purple, Deep Blue, Surf, Pacific, Turquoise, Jamaica, Breakers, Candy Green, Cypress, Bluegrass, Clover, Grass Green, Honeydew.

I thought about quilting this one myself, but it was a bit too large to fit it through the throat space of my Bernina 440QE, so I asked Heather of redwillowquilts.com to do her magic again. And I love how it turned out!

She used the White Space pantograph which really complements the simple design of the quilt and lets the colours do the talking.

This wideback from the Imagine collection by Kristy Lea for Riley Blake Designs was the perfect backing for this rainbow quilt. I've had this in my stash for a little bit, waiting for a quilt to use it on. And I love that, quite by accident, the colours of the quilt top actually matched the ones in the backing fabric.

Chasing Rainbows is available in Make Modern Issue 55. You can purchase individual issues, or get subscriptions for 6 months, 12 months or their fabulous All Access Subscription, which includes literally everything they've ever published (which means my previously published patterns are all in there, too).
